EXPLORE
Regarding Old Testament prophets, what do we learn about:
the content and purpose of their prophecies
their understanding of their role in the “big picture” of history
In v.12, who is Peter referring to when he says “those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven”? Why does this matter?
According to v.12, who gave aid to both the Old and New Testament messengers of the Gospel?
One implication of the final line in v.12 is angels marvel at the Gospel and yet don’t experience it in the way believers do. First, wow. Second, what does this mean…i.e. how do Christians experience the Gospel in a way angels do not?
Given the circumstances of Peter’s readers, what would this section have meant to them on a personal/experiential level?
Apply
v.12 gives two mind-blowing statements: a) the prophets realized they were “serving you,” and b) angels “long to look” into the salvation given to you. How does this impact you, both regarding your identity and how you feel about the time and place you live in? How else does this affect you?
Peter makes it clear who we should listen to regarding ultimate truth and behavior. Be honest…do you believe this? If not, which voices do you listen to regarding what you do/think/believe?
How might you read the Old Testament differently in light of v.10-12?
