EXPLORE
What stands out to you in the texts?
What does Paul mean when he says that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evils?”
What is the distinction between our fleeing from the love of material things and the “good fight of faith” to “keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ?”
What is the treasure being stored up as a good foundation for the future Paul refers to in verse 19? How does it bring upon what is “truly life” versus the uncertainty of material wealth?
APPLY
Why is it important for Christians, in particular, to be content with the basics such as food, water, shelter, and clothing? How does the desire to be rich distract and distort us from true life with Jesus?
Paul recognizes that as followers of Jesus, we are awaiting the “cash in” of our investment of faith. That one day we will see Jesus face to face and the pursuit of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness in knowing and loving Him will not have been in vain. How does the testimony of what Jesus has done for us keep us in that “fight” for what we cannot currently see with our eyes?
How does generosity help break the bondage of the pursuit of riches? How might we balance fleeing from the love of money with the enjoyment of it as Paul commands in verse 17?
PRAY
We would be shaped into people of generosity and love like Christ
Pray for the needs of each other and for our city
