1 Peter 2:11-12 — Sojourners and Exiles

Read

1 Peter 2:11-12

EXPLORE

  1. Why do you think Peter reminds us we’re “sojourners and exiles” in the world before exhorting us to follow v.11b-12?

  2. Why do you think Peter prefaces this section (living among unbelievers) with the section on the importance of deep relationships and love within the local church (1:22-2:10)?

  3. “Passions of the flesh” include any natural impulse contrary to that of the Spirit.

    1. give some examples of of what Peter may have in mind with this term

    2. how does this challenge the “be true to yourself” maxim in our culture?

    3. how does remembering you’re a sojourner and exile help you do battle with these passions?

  4. What reason does Peter give for living honorable lives among the Gentiles (unbelievers)?

Apply

  1. Are you most attracted toward withdrawal from the world or assimilation into the world (i.e. remaining indistinct with your actions/values)? What would change if you applied Peter’s words here?

  2. Considering the answer to #4 above, how does this motivate you to put to death passions of the flesh and live a distinct life among unbelievers? (consider both your public and private life). What behavior, pastime, or value may the Lord be asking you to set aside in order to display Jesus to an unbeliever?

  3. On Sunday, Justin Pearson encouraged us by saying “You are one of the most important people in your neighborhood and workplace because you have the best news in all the world” and challenged us by saying “if you don’t know or spend much time with your neighbors [or unbelieving friends/co-workers], take time this week to answer the question ‘Why?’”

    1. what is your answer to the “why?” how can your church (1:22-2:10) come alongside and help you?
