  1. What stands out to you in these texts?

  2. What does this commandment tell us about how God values the covenant of marriage and the protection of his image bearers? What does it tell us about ourselves/our culture?

  3. In Matthew 5, Jesus extends the 7th commandment to not only the act of adultery, but the lust within our hearts and minds. How is Jesus giving us an invitation to flee from that sin in repentance while also giving us the invitation to trust in Him, the only one who remained sexually pure both in body and in mind?

APPLY

  1. What are some practical ways that we can heed the warning Jesus gives us in Matthew 5 to cut off the sin of the lust?

  2. Some of us have come from church backgrounds that viewed sex or sexual desire as something to feel shame for; while our culture today tells us that as long as it is consensual it is a good pursuit. How do these verses and Jesus’ response to the woman caught in adultery in John 8 invite us to neither demonize nor idolize sex but to see and walk in it as God has intended us to?
