Matthew 16:1-12

EXPLORE

  1. What stands out to you in the passage?

  2. Why do you think Jesus answers as He does in v.2-4?

  3. Why would Jesus give His disciples the warning in v.6? What do you think He perceives in them (if anything) and why?

  4. What do the “five loaves for the five thousand and…the seven loaves for the four thousand” have to do with Jesus’ overarching concern?

  1. When Jesus perceives what’s underneath the religious leaders’ demand for a sign, He responds in a particular manner and then leaves them. a) What can we learn from this? b) Should we always respond like this when we think someone won’t believe in the Gospel no matter what they see or hear? Why/why not? c) How do prayer and humility play into situations like this?

  2. The disciples had a genuine desire to love and follow Jesus, yet there were ways they didn’t fully see, know, or trust Him. In what ways do you think God is calling you to see and trust Him more fully?

  3. Jesus wants His disciples “watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees” not for the end goal of passing a theology exam, but so they can be with Him and become like Him. What are ways you can practice being with Jesus and becoming like Jesus in the nitty-gritty of your daily life?
