Isaiah 9:1-7

Explore

  1. What stands out to you in the passage?

  2. What is the “darkness” that Isaiah refers to in verse 2? (spiritual, political, etc.) How will the light of Christ address it for God’s people?

  3. What is the day of Midian? How does this event point to God’s power to deliver his people in Christ?

  4. What does it mean that the “government” would be upon the Messiah’s shoulders?

  5. What does each title—Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace—reveal about the character and mission of the Messiah?

APPLY

  1. The people of God were waiting for Him to act in their lives, yet many fell away from this hopeful disposition. How can we remain hopeful in waiting for God to move (whether situationally or eschatologically)? How does the incarnation of Christ help us do that?

  2. The prophet Isaiah lists some of the titles and attributes of Christ. Using these titles as a guide (Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace), what are some ways the light of Christ has shone in your life recently? How are we to engage in bringing light into the darkness in our homes, city, and world?

PRAY

We would remain hopeful of Christ’s work in our lives and world

We would join Him in His work as we eagerly expect his coming

Pray for the needs of each other and for our city
